The construction industry plays a significant and indispensable role in striving towards a more sustainable future of the built environment. Yet over recent decades, the worldwide construction industry has experienced persistently low productivity growth, accompanied by skilled labour shortages, ageing workforces, cost escalation, and increasingly environmental burdens across the project lifecycle. These long-standing issues demand an urgent need for a transformative paradigm exceeding conventional construction practices.
Modular construction has emerged as a promising response to this call for change. By transforming fragmented site-based building processes into value-driven production and assembly of prefinished modules, modular construction introduces standardised manufacturing, parallel workflows, and lifecycle integration. It revitalises the industry with new opportunities to realise enhanced quality, productivity, safety, and sustainability. Today, modular construction has been adopted globally, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Singapore, and Australia, spanning residential, healthcare, educational, and infrastructure projects. Modular construction is shifting the construction paradigm to an industrialised delivery practice.
There are significant benefits demonstrated by adopting the modular construction approach, yet multifaceted challenges co-exist. Continuous efforts are necessary to expand its technical frontiers and foster sustained innovation. Effective global mechanism for information exchange and knowledge sharing is still lacking, hampering collective learning and accumulation of best practices. Deeper engagement and understanding from policymakers are also needed.
Accordingly, addressing these challenges calls for a shared global platform and an open ecosystem that can unite the community around common goals.
It is in this context that the International Association for Modular Construction (IAMC) is founded to lead research and innovation in modular construction and to serve as a global academic, industrial, and social nexus. IAMC is committed to disseminating frontier knowledge, informing policymaking and review at societal, governmental, organisational, and project levels, and actively promoting the adoption of innovative modular construction technologies and management practices.
IAMC embodies a collective vision for the future of the construction industry. I warmly invite scholars, engineers, industry leaders, and policymakers worldwide to join this endeavour and to co-create the future of modular construction. Together, we shall foster an open, collaborative, and sustainable ecosystem, prosper the construction industry, and build a smarter, more sustainable, and more resilient built environment.
